More Is Caught Than Taught

Why the life you model shapes your children more than the lessons you teach

When most parents think about discipleship, they picture intentional moments of instruction. They think about reading Bible stories before bed, praying together as a family, or having meaningful conversations about faith after church. Those moments are valuable, but they are not the only times our children are learning from us. In many ways, they are learning far more from what we consistently do than from what we occasionally say.

Children are always observing. They notice how we respond when life becomes difficult, how we speak about other people, how we handle disappointment, and where we turn when we need comfort or direction. They may not remember every conversation we have with them, but they will remember the patterns they witnessed throughout their childhood. Long before our children are able to explain what they believe, they are developing an understanding of faith by watching ours.

Everyday moments become lifelong lessons

One of the most beautiful aspects of biblical parenting is that God never intended discipleship to happen only during formal teaching moments. In Deuteronomy 6, parents are instructed to talk about God's commands while sitting at home, walking along the road, lying down, and getting up. The picture is one of ordinary life. Faith is woven into everyday conversations, everyday decisions, and everyday routines.

This reminds us that parenting is not simply about communicating information. It is about demonstrating what it looks like to follow Christ in the ordinary moments of life. The way we respond to frustration, extend forgiveness, show kindness, and remain faithful through difficulty often teaches lessons that words alone never could.

Children are looking for authentic faith

One of the remarkable things about children is how quickly they recognize authenticity. They notice when our words and our actions align, and they also notice when they don't. If we tell them that prayer matters but never pray, or if we teach them about grace but refuse to extend it ourselves, those inconsistencies become part of what they learn.

Thankfully, God has never called parents to perfection. The goal is not to present ourselves as people who never fail, but as people who know where to turn when we do. Some of the most powerful lessons our children will ever witness are moments of humility, repentance, and dependence on God's grace. When they see parents who are quick to apologize, eager to forgive, and committed to growing in Christ, they gain a clearer picture of the gospel than perfection could ever provide.

Parenting begins with our own walk with God

It is easy to become focused on all the things we hope our children will become. We want them to know Scripture, love the Church, make wise decisions, and develop a genuine relationship with Jesus. Those are worthy desires, but the greatest influence we have on their spiritual formation is often the condition of our own hearts.

Children cannot help but notice what receives our time, attention, and affection. If they see parents who consistently prioritize their relationship with God, they learn that faith is more than a Sunday activity. They begin to understand that following Jesus shapes every part of life.

Our children do not need parents who have every answer. They need parents who are faithfully following Christ themselves.

The legacy we leave

Every parent is leaving a spiritual legacy, whether intentionally or unintentionally. The question is not whether our children are learning from us, but what they are learning as they watch us live.

That reality should not fill us with fear, but with purpose. God has entrusted parents with an incredible opportunity to reflect His character in everyday life. Through ordinary faithfulness, simple acts of obedience, and a genuine love for Christ, parents can leave an eternal impact that reaches far beyond childhood.

While They're Watching was written to encourage parents in that calling. Through biblical wisdom and practical encouragement, Pastor Adam Mesa explores how everyday moments become opportunities to model authentic faith and point the next generation toward Christ.
